Hairdo Hat For Baby

This crazy idea occurred to me last night when I was playing with my little girl and her blankie was on her head.   I'm calling it the Hairdo Hat.  It was beyond easy to make and the LOLs from her, me, my husband & older kids when we saw it on her told me this was a win. I do want to say I love my little girl's sweet, bald head, but since it's going to be a while before we can even stick a barrette (let alone ponytails) in her hair, this was a fun way to have a "hairdo".
All I did was cut a 14x20" piece of brown fleece, stitch a seam down the middle for a "part" and while it was on her head, gathered the two sides into hairbands.  Then I cut 1/4" strips from the two sides, pulled them so they'd be flufflier (a little fleece trick I learned recently) and replaced the hairbands with ribbons tied in bows.
I cannot wait to take her out wearing this hat - she already seems to love it.  I've already got another Hairdo Hat idea I'm ready to try out.  Boy, does this give new meaning to the phrase "hat hair";)

I Heart Fun For Free

With Valentine's day coming I'm in the mood for holiday themed stuff, but buying a bunch of things isn't in my budget.  This was a cheap and easy way to get in the spirit & give my little lovey some new play things.  I just used some scrap fabric that had texture (minky, corduroy & velour) and leftover ribbon I had from the $1 section at Target, so the $0 cost was very budget-friendly  I cut out some heart shapes, added a ribbon loop, stuffed them & then ladder stitched the opening closed.  To add a little interest for baby, I put a bell in each of the pink hearts & some crinkly cellophane in the corduroy one.

She loves grabbing at dangling toys right now & to make them even more versatile, I added some snaps to a piece of twill tape so they could be attached to just about everything: her play mats, saucer toy & stroller just to name a few.

Fun, practical and free.  Big win all around!

My Readers Rock!

Thank you so much for the wonderful comments on my Baby Figure Skates!  Hearing from so many readers really made my week - it's a real pleasure knowing other crafty people like my stuff and seeing so many comments made me do the happy dance:)  It's also gotten me geared up for some more creative projects.  My little skates are being featured in Spotlight Sunday on Fireflies & Jellybeans today.  Head on over & check out the other fab goodies!

Baby Figure Skates

With the Winter Olympics coming up, how else is a baby supposed to train to be a champion figure skater?  I'd seen incredibly cute knitted booties that looked like skates, but since my knitting skills are pretty basic I decided to come up with a sewing version.

Using fleece, I whipped up a quick design and presto:  Babies on ice!  Here a few action shots:
Getting ready to try them out (she's just a little nervous to get out there, as you can see)
And success!  Such smooth moves & natural grace, definitely ready to go for the gold.  I'm sharing these with some fun linking parties:

Dressing Up The Winter

Being at home with 3 kids & in the throes of a chilly, snowy winter out here, a wardrobe comprised of sweats, fleeces & other misc. comfortwear is not exactly stylish, but makes sense.  Next weekend is my daughter's baptism though, so I needed to sideline the fuzzy robe for a nice winter dress.  The trouble was nothing seemed right-until I made this little number.

I used the Torii Tunic pattern from Serendipity Studios & a cute bird print fabric I found at Joann's.  It has a real European style to it that I really like.  I also like how there are a lot of variations that can be done with it (shorter to wear with jeans, different sleeve lengths, using more fabric combos, etc.).  I was a little nervous installing an invisible zipper & that there were a lot of pieces to put together.

While I plan on making a few more (tunic length to wear with jeans sounds cute) I did have two big gripes about this pattern.  First is the less-than-helpful yardage info.  It's the same for all sizes (there is no way XXS & XXL require the same amount of fabric) & lists all pieces separately as though you're using different fabrics for every section.  This made it impossible to calculate what I really needed.  I laid out the pieces on my cutting mat and measured instead. BIG difference of 2 2/3yds total vs. the 4+yds indicated.  Second, while this pattern is probably not for a beginner, the wording of the directions made some steps seem more complicated than they actually are and jumped around a bit too much.  All in all though, I do like how it turned out, so I'd say it was worth getting if you have moderate sewing skills and like coming up with your own color & print combos.

All Suited Up

While I love trying out new patterns and designs, there is something to be said for the ones that become favorites - where a new fabric or color combo makes you fall in love with it all over again.  This little union suit has become one of those for me.  The design is from the winter 09 issue of Ottobre Design and there are multiple reasons this is a great pattern.  First it's pretty easy to make - just a front, back, sleeves & trim.  Second it requires very little fabric, so for my 6mos size 1/2yd was plenty.  Lastly, it's practical - snap up legs and lap shoulders for easy on & off and a roomy fit.  Oh, and did I mention it looks super cute on?  Here's some proof:

I'm in love with this fabric as well - it doesn't show too well in the photos, but there's a silver sparkle to it, which inspired me to make this little matching hat:

I used my flower hat design from last summer, but I decided to use a snap to attach the flower to the hat.  Added bonus is it makes the hat interchangeable once I dream up a few more accent ideas that can be attached.  More on that idea to come....

New Year, New Look

Happy New Year!  After spending the past year looking at so many lovely blogs, I figured it was time this one got a new look for 2010.  Ta-da!  2009 brought some great milestones: my 1yr anniversary of learning to sew, my blog being discovered by other craft lovers and most importantly, the birth of my sweet daughter, Serena.  I'm hoping this new year will be full of more great things.

I received some promising looking books & crafting gear for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to doing some reviews, showing new projects, coming up with more tutorials and sharing more of what I've learned.  Here's to a year of possibilities & discoveries!
