Today I thought I'd share a really fun & easy craft for the kids : Treasure Stones. Who doesn't like digging for treasure? It's also very eco-friendly since it's all natural ingredients and using old coffee grounds that would normally get tossed out.
1 cup used coffee grounds
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/4 cup sand
3/4 cup water
Stuff to dig up (toys, faux jewels, coins, etc.)
Mix dry ingredients, then add water 1/4 cup at a time until a dough-like consistency.
Form into balls and make a hole. Insert a treasure and add a little more stone mix to close hole.
Put on cookie sheet. Dry 2-3 days or, if impatient (like me), put in oven on 150 degrees for 15-20 min.
Once hard, stones are ready to be cracked open by your little treasure seekers using chisels, hammers or other digging gear.
Eureka - We've found a diamond (and don't I wish it were real)!
Thrifty, easy & fun - what could be better?!?

We tried these out today and made 'dinosaur eggs' for an egg hunt! So fun!
ReplyDeleteI am so excited!! I have a friend bringing her son over for a play date this week, and I think the kids will have a blast searching for these and opening them up!
ReplyDeleteThey love them - almost as fun making them as breaking them open too!
DeleteDo you think i would be able to make these ahead of time for a party? or will time make them too hard? also what could i give the kids to use to chip away at the rock ?
ReplyDeleteThey need to be made ahead so they will be hard. Little hammers or chisels work well.
DeleteIt depends on how hard they seem. Small real hammers or something metal will work best.
ReplyDeleteI made this for my son's 6th birthday. He's now 32 LOL. My favorite project. I'd like to make them bigger so they can fit more goodies. It also makes it easier to open so the kids can just use her hands
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS AMAZING!!!I have to make one for my daughter, but I am not sure my husband would like to get messy....
ReplyDeleteIt's minimal mess - especially if done on a tray or in a bowl. And so much fun, it's worth it;)
